Department Of Energy - The Grid - Explainer Video
Making America’s Power Grid Easier to Understand
For the U.S. Department of Energy, FEVR created an explainer video that turns the complex story of America’s power grid into a clear and engaging narrative. Designed for both institutional stakeholders and the general public, the film explains how the grid operates, how it is evolving, and why this transformation matters.

Crafting Seamless Transitions Through Storyboarding in Motion Graphics
Before starting the animation phase of this motion graphics explainer video, we took the time to create a hand-drawn storyboard, a crucial step to explore the many fluid transition possibilities offered by this clean graphic style.

Structuring a Clear Editorial Narrative
We began by identifying the essential ideas, establishing a natural progression, and simplifying technical concepts without losing their accuracy. The story positions the power grid as “the most sophisticated machine ever created,” giving the film a strong and accessible starting point.

Developing the Mixed-Media Direction
FEVR developed a visual direction combining documentary footage, photography, graphic compositions, and animation. This mixed-media approach allowed us to give tangible form to subjects such as renewable-energy integration, electricity distribution, and advanced storage technologies.

Designing Every Sequence Around the Voiceover
Each sequence was built to support the narration. We selected and composed the imagery, created the transitions, and animated diagrams and typographic elements to guide the viewer through the explanation while maintaining a clear visual rhythm.

Bringing the Full Film Together
The final film combines voiceover, editing, motion graphics, and sound within one coherent visual language. It reflects FEVR’s approach to explainer video production: understand the subject, define the clearest narrative, and create visuals that make complex information credible, accessible, and engaging.
